Ben Davis is a U.S. based work clothing line. It was founded in San Francisco, CA by Ben Davis and his father, Simon Davis in 1935. Company founder Benjamin Franklin Davis’ grandfather, Jacob Davis, was instrumental in the creation of the original Levi’s Jeans.
Ben Davis is run by his son Frank, who was interviewed in a 1995 Grand Royal magazine article. The iconic logo of the brand is a smiling gorilla which has been said to be the inspiration for the xlarge clothing logo, also a gorilla.

My great grandfather was the original designer of the Ben Davis monkey. He was a sign painter in the Oakland- Berkeley area back in the 20’s- 40’s and he was hired to design and paint the sign above the San Pablo Ave store. It would be really nice if Ben Davis have some credit to the artist. It’s an important part of my family history. I am 5th Generation Bay Area native and it’s sad to know that the company paid him $100 to design the logo and they won’t publicly acknowledge the facts.
